Stats show fatal overdoses decreasing, FWPD’s HART team seeing success

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Fort Wayne Police held a press conference Wednesday morning led by Captain Kevin Hunter of the Vice and Narcotics unit.

They highlighted a decrease in overdose deaths in Fort Wayne thanks to the work of the Hope and Recovery (HART) team and the distribution of NARCAN throughout the community.

The HART team is made up of social workers and officers who have received peer recovery training to help those battling addiction get treatment.

“We can’t arrest our way out of this,” Captain Hunter said when describing the necessary steps to combat fatal overdoses.
